Selva Marroquin arrived at Caltech in December 2020 as a GPS Division Prize Postdoctoral Fellow. She was subsequently awarded an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ocean Sciences that allowed her to continue her work here until December, 2023. While at Caltech, Selva has been studying the physical and biological factors that lead to different sulfur isotope fractionations in marine organic matter. Her work thus far has revealed that differences between organic sulfur and minerals such as pyrite mainly reflect differences in the depths at which they form, which in turn is related to C and Fe supply, burial rate, and sediment permeability. The hope is that we will eventually be able to use such patterns in ancient rocks to interpret the environmental history of Earth's Oceans. Selva will start as a new Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in January 2024. She is building her own stable isotope laboratory, and will continue to pursue sulfur isotopic records of Earth History. Good luck, Selva!
